All men got used to success stories. People like ‘happy ends’. But what is at the back of them? Ladies and gentlemen! Let me introduce the ‘hidden rocks of freelancing’!

Lack of money

It is cool to read that somebody earns $10,000 or more per month in the passive mode just drinking the cocktails somewhere on the islands. We believe that it’s easy to achieve this. Just follow the pieces of advice and it’ll be ok! No, indeed!

Let’s suppose that you are newcomer. Your path is just begun. You still had to master your skills until you’re blue in the face. But money is wanted at once, lot of money. You are considerably inspired by the stories when people become rich within a very short period of time. You make your portfolio, spam all social networks by the latter, but have no clients. If only there are some of them they are beggars or free riders (we don’t consider situations when you immediately attracted the cool clients). Such situation with no money may last for several months. You’ll get stuck in the accounts and your relatives will consider you the total loser.
What’s to be done?
Don’t plunge into freelance without skills. Learn and study your specialization so far as you have opportunities and time. It is futureless to work for peanuts. The art may be your hobby but not the key job at the early stages. Don’t fall for quick earning. It’s a myth. You need to know something even to get the passive gains. It’s good if you are the artist. In this case, you won’t face any problems. At the same time, the newcomer will experience difficulties. It often happened to me see how the beginning artists discontinued their work just because it didn’t bring them profit for the first months. They naively believed that it’s very easy to paint or represent. Such people believe in the enormous earnings of the famous artists who may spend practically all their life to achieve the success. To say the truth, it is incredibly difficult to be the artist because this work is far from being available for all. It requires many skills, knowledge, patience, constant development of personal potential. This area has its own professional diseases which are faced by practically all artists with the course of time. Be ready to have no money and clients in the early stages. This period might occur again later on even if you became successful and developed your own base of clients. This is one of the ‘hidden rocks’ of freelance.

Chasing the Chinese

When I studied at different courses in Russia I was often provided the example of how extensively the Chinese work. The students in the group were always surprised by their productivity as well as their little rest and high degree of performance. The trainers recommended to be focused on their way of life just preferring ‘more work and less sleep!’ motto. At that time, it was normal not to sleep for 2-3 days in a row. With the course of time, it became no so cool anymore. Today, I freely speak about HOW they all were mistaken.

The chronic fatigue, insomnia, apathy, depressive syndrome, soreness, antipathy to clients, hate of everything, repetitive stress injury, sight loss… Do I need to continue? That is the very one list you are possible to face if ‘chasing the Chinese’. You will stupidly lose the part of your health. But who invented this ‘Chinese’ at all?! Do you really know how they live in deed?! Are you sure that it’s cool to work 20 hours per day within 40 years?! Why on earth you need to do this work! If you haven’t understood this yet the worst would have been ahead.
What’s to be done?
Please, don’t be in the hot pursuit of anybody! All people are unique! Not all people may master the complex skills for months. We all are very different. We need different time. It’s just necessary to find our individual regime. I will repeat myself; don’t sacrifice your own health! Don’t think that you’ll become rich one day and be treated somewhere in the urgent clinics in old age! It’s better to be always healthy! Therefore, I encourage you not to believe in myth ‘about the Chinese’. The work shouldn’t replace your life!

Double-crossers

They were, are and will be. Work just on a pre-paid basis. 50/50% correlation will be an optimal variant for you and client. Don’t agree to the doubtful scams. Don’t set to work that is promised to be ‘paid later’. These are traps. Today, the cheats are so advanced, cunning and clever that it’s difficult to find a man who has never been deceived by anybody. Practically all people come in contact with the cheats. It’s difficult to figure out such people at once.

Friends and relatives

It is dangerous enough to work with the relatives. They may get peeved at you because of money, as well as break off relations. The friends may turn into foes and begin to take revenge. It is necessary to find very subtle approach to both types. It’s not always pleasant to work for free. In this situation, you may feel the psychological discomfort. The best variant is to prevent such situations. However, remember that just you choose with whom and for whom to work. If the friends and relatives aren’t an albatross around your neck you are possible to freely do something for them within due limits once again.

Creative crisis or no motivation

Undoubtedly, this also happens. Frankly speaking, it’s hard for me to believe those people who haven’t the difficult moments in life. It’s unrealistic for some reason. It’s impossible for all to be always perfect. It’s much more appealing to read how to get managed with such situations.

Thus, let’s consider the typical scenario: the client awfully got under your skin and you don’t want to work for him even for a price. At the same time, you began to work prolonging the deadlines being already paid. Let’s complicate the situation: you cannot return money to the client as you spent them. Moreover, you still can’t fulfill the order because you have no motivation. I personally observed such situations with freelancers. They are horrible in very deed. There is the only one way out. You need just to overcome and give the missing work. However, the psychology of creative people is a subtle thing. It may take several weeks or even months until freelancer begins to work. It is natural that client may not only begin to wail but also raise a stink for such period. Undoubtedly, you may say that you experienced difficulties but it will get by only with the understanding client and expanding deadline.
Why it happens?
It may be simply explained. This happens because of performer inexperience. Moreover, the lack of discipline that is another terrible problem of freelancers may be added to the list. If the person isn’t taught to discipline from the childhood it is difficult at a later age. Don’t take the mickey out of such people. It’s very serious problem. The incredible will and drive are required to win it. Truly speaking, the strong motivation is usually enough to do this. Such motivation is most often represented by the money equivalent, exact deadlines and fixed penalty. For example, I got the plenty good enough money motivating me to daily work for 15-16 hours per day for several months when cooperating with the Asian game company. Today, I won’t settle for such schedule for sure.

Hate for everything

If you began to feel the hate for all flesh and not only after years of working on clients, it would be a cause to stop and give up all. We are often massively fed with the success stories of rich people, artists and actors. That’s a likely story! It would be easy to speak about success if you didn’t achieve it. But if not? What if freelancing disappointed you so much that you simply want to create sending all clients away with a flea in the ear? It’s logical that you need to somehow provide yourself with money and somehow live. It’s a variant to change the work but it’s better to master the passive earning. However, don’t hurry up to rush! It may be even more difficult than freelance. I’ll tell about it in the separate item.

Nuances

If you are a freelancer it will be worth to become the individual entrepreneur, work exclusively by contract and pay all taxes officially. Moreover, they are to be considered on labels exposed to the clients. The latter, in their turn, must pay all bank commissions including those for currency conversion. Don’t do a favour and don’t certainly work to your disadvantage. Actually, you solve their problems even if the work consists in the ‘simple picture painting’ or ‘company game figuring’.

Dumping

As justly noted in comments, the fantastically low prices are old established on the market. The artists and even studios work not just at cheap rate and food but even for simple ‘thank you’. Guys, what the hell?! The present client is so spoiled that many artists are simply forced to reduce their prices. This is a global challenge. Moreover, I’ll admit that it’s not uncommon to meet the clients who aren’t able to set apart the qualitative work from that one ‘made on the napkin’. Such clients will be satisfied by the ‘pupil level’, so afterwards we surprisingly observe the spotted billboards, eye-wrestling graphics of videos, games and films, as well as ‘jaw-dropping’ sites etc. So, the hypothesis for ‘world degradation of mankind’ seems to be not so fantastic.

Unexpected circumstances

As was already mentioned, the diseases, wars, natural calamities, equipment damage and more also may turn the life of freelancers into the hell. It’s simply impossible to be insured from some of them. You may be ready for them just morally and materially; one way or the other. It’s important to always consider this point and document it in the contract when working with the clients.

Talent: what is it?

Perhaps, some of you will disagree with me on the phrase "drawing is a skill", but I will give you one example. At the age of about three years, one cultivated love of art in me. My mother was my first teacher, who helped me to master most basic skills of drawing. She was a professional artist, but her contribution was the starting point in my future career. Subsequently, I practised a lot, since I liked drawing itself. The key word here is "practice". So, in my case, it was not about the talent but in the work on myself and my drawing skills. Actually, I tend to believe that talent is a myth.

* - Here I want to make a note that from scientific side we are ALL talented because each of us have a unique traits which helps in our life. But we can achieve good skills only through hard work. Nothing happens by the wave of a magic wand. This is what I meant.

Deep-rooted phobias

You know, some artists spend years are afraid to draw hands, feet, animals or people, and I am afraid to draw comics. It took me a while to realize that I'm not thinking as an artist and as an Illustrator, that is, by means of complete, complex works where the rendering level is at the forefront with the idea, and sometimes ahead of it. Now I have developed an understanding that comics aren't the render but the plot, story, and action. There are other principles. Comics don't have to be perfect and neatly drawn. Certainly, it all depends on goals, but if we don't learn to draw such abstract panels, even for ourselves, what kind of future can there be for us? Another point is that we can be pretty afraid to show others our process of learning.

It is incredibly difficult to overcome some fears, even when we learn at the highest level. Having no support is especially hard. A simple word can not only make one's day and inspire for further development but also destroy all the creativity. So, friends, never criticize, if you aren't asked. None of us is perfect, as well as our works. Better support others. This is really important, especially in this cruel world. You do good to others and this good will return to you in double.

To those who are afraid to draw something because of the fear of criticism I can offer the following options:
- Draw for yourself what you like, what you really love, or what you need to learn. Practice and do not show your works until you feel the need for it. If you know your flaws and mistakes, then work until they disappear. If not, then you can seek advice from mentors and numerous video courses.
- Create your circle of friends or acquaintances who will support you and whom you are not afraid to show your works. For example, you can make a group on the social network and spread your creativity. The feeling that someone actually likes your works will give you the strength and motivation to move on. You will also be able to communicate with your fans directly. Judging from my own experience, this works.

Procrastination

When we hear stories about near-death experiences, they make us rethink things in our lives. We can procrastinate not because of laziness, but because we just don't want to do something, this brings us no joy but oppression, fear, and sometimes much deeper problems.

Think about it, if you have something that you really want to do but you are afraid that you will never decide on it and, in the end, regretting giving up on it. Being young, we don't notice how fast time flies. But it is fleeting. Willing to do one project for the past 4 years, I said to myself:
"If I don't do this now, I will never do it".
And the reason of procrastination was commonplace. I just didn't have enough experience, and I had never portrayed what I wanted to draw. The first attempt was brutal. But at the third or fourth attempt (I don't remember for sure), I began to draw something I already liked. I still continue to work on that project and hope that I will be able to share it on the network in the future.

Oftentimes, artists are faced with debt projects with the deadlines that can be postponed indefinitely. It can be both simple art trades and orders. And it happens so that it is not the lack of professionalism or discipline. The common phenomenon is the fear of rejection of the work which is the same perfectionism, the fear of alteration of the project, the lack of motivation and interest in the work as a whole, creative crisis, burnout, and many other problems. If you often postpone the deadlines, it is best to review your activities and to take on something that you will surely complete on time. If you have a problem with orders, then try to work on stocks or the sale of designs of characters. They give more freedom and nobody pressures you. You can also become just a free artist and draw only what you want but not the society. In this case, you will have to find the source of income in something else.

Creativity shouldn't be a hard labour. It is a joy of a soul. Works made with love are able not just to cheer us up but even cure some diseases. If we don't feel love for what we do, then we often suffer ourselves.

Based on this, you should think if you are satisfied with everything that is happening in your life now. Certainly, my thought might "sound great", but people don't tend to think about anything unless something really serious happens. If we are not satisfied with our work, then those searching for alternatives will always find them. The main thing is to start searching. It's like a joke:
"If the patient really wants to live, then the medicine is powerless".

We will continue talking about Fears and Phobias in Part 3. Stay tuned!

Artist's Killers - Part 1 [EN]

Fears and phobias

What stops you from being a successful artist? It seems easy to sit down, draw, improve your skills, and then everything will come with experience. But, according to my personal observations, not all people are able to pass this way, even if they are enrolled in courses or special institutions. The high cost of the tools and teachers also don't guarantee that you will become the new Hollywood illustrator.

And you know what? Nobody and nothing will ever guarantee your own success. It is trite, insulting, but all depends on us: our way of thinking, inner peace, upbringing, temperament, and a bunch of other factors. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, EVERYTHING affects how successful we can become. It is enough for some people to get into the popular studio, while others become gurus spending their lives under lock and key.

Fears of beginners

When beginners see a great picture with lots of details, usually, they can't repeat the level, and if they try, it turns out to be mediocre. This is normal. Many artists are afraid of doing something that far exceeds their skills. Some of them are so scared that they are unable to try something new and unusual. So to speak, to get out of the comfort zone. Some artists fear criticism and nagging. Others categorically refuse to draw something that they do worst. Perfectionists, for example, are terribly obsessed with details, improving every pixel in their works. Such artists will always find imperfections.

Each case requires separate consideration but, oftentimes, the problem is in their way of thinking. I emphasize that word, since it is one of the main sources of troubles.

When I was a beginner, I paid too much attention to details and believed that it was necessary to reach the level of hyper-realism. I thought a perfect work was indistinguishable from a photograph. And the problem was in my lack of confidence. For me, the coolest style was realism, and I simply didn't consider others. They were perceived as alien, sometimes too simple. This was one of my mistakes. Since I had been a perfectionist, I was often fond of details, greatly overloading the general and wasting a lot of time on them. I thought that I couldn't show anyone my work without this. This was the biggest misconception.

The artist can't be afraid of the task, but he/she will give up not knowing how to complete it. If we take a difficult project, we can work on it for a long time. It will be good if we finish it in a few days, weeks or months. It happens so that the finale comes in a few years. We can continue working on the project, improving it from time to time. Though, probably, another artist in our place would finish it much earlier. It usually happens with more experienced artists. Based on this, my personal recommendation is that you shouldn't try to jump over your head if you are unsure about your own abilities. Brush up your knowledge, find mentors, provide yourself with a guarantee that you will be able to reach the set goal. Otherwise, it risks resulting in a protracted idea, which actually happened to me.

Here are a few of the problems and fears of beginners at the first steps of their career:
  • 1) Uncertainty regarding the accuracy of what we do.
  • 2) Lack of confidence in what the work should be like in the end. Also, I would like to add here the lack of vision of the final result (and this is important).
  • 3) Fear of doing something wrong and fear of condemnation.
  • 4) Fear to take on something that turns out bad or something we have never done.
  • 5) Fear of time or lack of patience. As is known, training is a long and sometimes very difficult process. We want to become professionals very fast and we aren't ready to accept the fact that we have to spend more than one year for this.
  • 6) Perfectionism is the fear of the slightest omission and inaccuracy. In this case, beginners often try to do their best in every project. The lower level of a masterpiece isn't acceptable. The slightest criticism may not be perceived well.
  • 7) Dependence on the opinion of others. Here we should add the dependency on site-based ratings (number of likes, comments, subscribers, etc.). They can make us slaves of website systems.
  • 8) Lack of goals. Some beginners don't know why they draw and learn this. Some of them draw without looking at their friends, family or successful artists.
  • 9) Another thing is when beginners start drawing to become famous and rich. It is sad, but they do not stay on track for a long time and quickly give up. Such goals are not enough to become a true master. One needs love for one is doing. Otherwise, we will suffer from chronic fatigue, burnout and all other things that make a person unhappy. Art is not a business but, primarily, an expression of a soul.

In fact, there are much more points, but I mentioned the most common ones.
If you are a beginner, remember a few things:
  • 1) Ideal is a myth. There are no perfect works. Similarly, there is no perfect style or rules in drawing. Yes, there are certain laws that must be followed, but they all are aimed at making the perception of our drawings clear, interesting and enjoyable for others. The study of colour, light, composition, anatomy, perspective and other things is necessary for these purposes. The artist conveys the visual idea, thought, story, or mood by means of graphics. The writer uses words and sentences for the same purpose. The same is true in respect of the work from the category of masterpieces. Initially, they aren't like this. The title "masterpiece" is awarded by the society. These are simply works that many people like a lot. It is the society that makes them classics.
  • 2) Painting is a skill. I repeated, repeat and will repeat this idea. Absolutely anyone can learn how to draw. The only difference is that it will take different periods of time to master it. It's as if you are learning a foreign language. The more often you practice the faster you achieve certain results. Just like learning the language, one can't master drawing in 100%. There is no limit of improvement. You can only reach the level that you are comfortable with and work in it on a regular basis. But even this level will never be your limit. You will evolve constantly. There is also a possible degradation, so be careful.
  • 3) There are no "correct" ways to draw. Art is generally an inexact science. I'm not talking about using the exact laws of perspective or light. Actually, the pattern can be anything, even simple scribbles of a child or abstraction of colours. It is important what they convey and contain. Art has to be something accurate.
  • 4) Different teachers, artists, mentors and even ordinary people will always have different opinions regarding what the work should be like. We all have different visions. You should have your own. Otherwise, you will depend on others. Learn and adopt the experience of others, but always think on your own
  • 5) Making mistakes is normal. You may not realize this now, but it's true. They are part of our development. Today we can be messy in our works, and tomorrow we can create something worthy of the general public. People often fear the outside, unasked criticism and, therefore, tend to make their works as perfect as possible. In their understanding, the same anatomy can only be "perfect". The fear of nagging is so great that they may not undertake to draw something they aren't certain about. This can hinder their artistic development and career as a whole.

Going back in my thoughts, I would like to add the following:
  • 1) Don't be afraid of complicated illustrations. First, explore the process, how these are generally created and what you need for this. It only seems so scary and unattainable. Always start with something small and simple. Practice, gradually complicating your works. You will develop your understanding and change the way of thinking. Sooner or later you will reach this "impossible" goal and it will cease to seem so. Most importantly, do not give up.
  • 2) Large-scale scenes require large-scale thinking. You will have to adjust, to realize what is important and what is secondary, whether it's a city or a space battle. Planning and composition are important here. Details play a complementary role.
  • 3) Be mentally prepared for failure. Even in my practice, not all pictures come out worthy of showing online. It is very important to enjoy the process, even if the result is not that great. Any such experience makes you stronger. Constantly making fantastic illustrations is impossible, since a man is not a machine. Do not reproach and not blame yourself. Even simple sketches develop the motility of your hands; and the better they are trained, the more accurately you draw. So, even if you spent a lot of time on the poor illustration, you still made a huge contribution to your development.

Today, I would like to present you the third but brief article on earnings for artists. So, let's begin!

Earnings pyramid

It consists of three levels:

Level 3 includes earnings from orders, work for a client, firm, company, etc. This niche is one of those called "do this for money". It is placed at the bottom of the pyramid as it's the most common and available one. Today, "working for others" is easier compared to higher levels.

Level 2 includes earnings from stocks, the sale of goods of own production, as well as design of characters, etc. This stage is much harder than the previous one if you choose it as the main field. You will have to work for your fans, follow the demand for goods, timely update and do all that is typical of online shopping. Level 2 is similar to Level 1 but it is not so difficult and requires less responsibility.

Level 1 is on top of the pyramid, consisting of earnings on the educational content, courses, training, mentoring, etc. In fact, all the top artists, sooner or later, begin to make video tutorials, record their work process and upload it to the Internet. This is the most popular category of goods. At Level 1, they can also open their own schools. It is the most profitable business but also the hardest one that requires the greatest responsibility. This option is not suitable for beginners in painting. It is suitable for experienced artists who have skills, interesting portfolio and a certain level of popularity. The greater and more famous the artist, the more people would like to learn from him/her. So, if you feel like choosing this niche, then the scheme of reaching the "top of the pyramid" will be the following:

1) Master basic techniques, hone your skills and achieve mastery at what you do.
2) Create an interesting portfolio.
3) Hype yourself by all available means. According to statistics, about 10 people out of 1,000 will become your real clients. On this basis, be guided by the principle "the more, the better".
4) Upon gathering a huge base of subscribers, start to produce educational content, go to Patreon, create a store on Gumroad or arrange the sale on its website. And then, improve yourself. Most importantly, don't be too greedy and put too high prices at the start.

But, as discussed, Level 1 is the most demanding. At initial stages, you may not have any personal time, not to mention weekends and holidays. Promotion may take years, but results may be calculated not only by thousands of dollars per post on Patreon.

You can combine all three levels based on your current position. Sometimes, stocks or orders bring much more money than lessons. Or you can do a project that will passively provide income for more than one month. Here you can find the niche that will be the best for you.

This article can be further extended with new information. Also, I would be interested to know your opinion in the comments! =) In the following article, we will talk about phobias and fears that stop artists not only from work but living their lives.

Artist's Killers \ Убийцы Художника [RU, EN soon]

*Dear customers, this is translated version of article from July 14 and it's not about you. With these people I'm not working already. However, it may be useful for freelancers who are working too hard but earn too little.

ART VS MONEY

One of the most unpleasant problems in freelance, which I sometimes encounter, is apathy to everything. This is normal if you are a workaholic and live by fulfilling other people’s needs. But, over the years of such a “life”, at some point, I’ve had an epiphany—I want to be an artist, not a wage worker. Just create art the way we like it and bluntly sculpt images for dough—this is like apples and oranges. When I had to act as a customer, I had often noticed that freelancers don’t put their hearts into what they are doing. They don’t care about the characters and worlds they needed to portray. Even if they were performed qualitatively, the viewer didn’t feel the magical atmosphere created by people, just working for themselves. This is common. For freelancers, it’s important to complete the order as fast as possible and yes, they are always interested only in money. It’s very rare to find specialists who are able to embrace not the client’s wallet, but the subject of the project.

The eternal struggle of art and the money...

One time, a client even said to me, “You are only interested in money!” Yes, damn it! We are only interested in money! Otherwise, why would freelancers want to do that? The quality of performance is a separate issue. But what about the soul? And not everyone is unable to put the heart in the work. Alas, the product delivered to the assembly line is able to lose it and become something of a “fast food” for the eyes. Often, it’s beautiful, bright, with a bunch of details, but done quickly, without much effort and it’s an acquired taste. Another thing is the pictures, on which one works for weeks, or even months. That’s where true masterpieces meet. They make you want to look at them for hours. These ones become classics.

I’m sick to work for the man. My clients often differed in a strange choice, and sometimes they ordered frank shit, which was ashamed to show in a professional environment. At the same time, customers enjoyed the result and came back more than ones. Well, as they say, “money has no smell” ... as long as you yourself are not indifferent to what you are doing.

I have a real-world example connected with one of my former teachers. For several years, he had worked as an icon painter in a game company and during this time, he hadn’t risen up the professional ladder. Every day he was given a monotonous, uniform work. At some point, he’d realized that if he didn’t change it, he would remain in his niche all his life without any professional growth. And he’d left, becoming, afterwards, a fairly well-known illustrator in the world. It can be concluded that if you are not very satisfied with your current state of affairs, then it makes sense to change something. Perhaps even globally.

The best is what is done for yourselves

This is an ordinary, simple truth. We don’t consider options when the customer is doing all the coolest, but for ourselves, there is only time for rough drafts.

When the artist works for his pleasure, he isn’t limited; he freely conveys his own vision in the project. The result is not always successful by ratings. What the author likes doesn’t have to like everyone. If he’s driven on the topic of the popularity and begins to work purely for the people, then his art turns into pop. Here there are different situations. Someone still manages to keep originality, but someone rolls into the stamping of porn anime of girls and, besides them, is no longer capable of anything. Well, if it really brings pleasure to the artist. It’s bad if he squeezes out the next illustration and, in the end, he burns professionally in pursuit of another batch of bucks.

Patreon lies

Don’t rush to criticize me for the headline. It’s about the numbers that are visible on the pages of artists. By experience, I can say that not all subscribers pay the author. These ghostly $500-1,000 a month is just an illusion. The actual amount can be zero at all. The subscription to the selected, price category is free of charge. A person pays only when he wants. Or maybe, he can even forget about it and be considered a “dead” user. So don’t rush to envy those who allegedly rake in 60 thousand dollars a month. Reality is a cruel thing.

Killers of creativity

Apathy is capable of killing a person is not just a creative mood but in general a desire to live. Freelancers, whose life passes in four walls, and those who fiercely hate their work, are at risk. In that case, it is not enough to change your thinking. It is required to radically revise your life, goals, plans, and aspirations.

I was always surprised by people who don’t have any goals in life. They calmly said that they were “floating down the river” and at the same time, they looked like total losers. Such people endlessly beef, complain and bother others. I’ve met several of these “specimens” came across me on my first dates. Cavaliers were quickly merged sent to the blacklist. Lack of goals in life is also capable of killing the creative component. You can forget about a successful career. I’m not talking about family.

The envy. Oh yes, it also kills. Don’t confuse it with the spirit of competition. The desire to top someone and stupid sabotage are two different things. I usually recommend forgetting about the object of irritation. Just throw it out of your mind and isolate yourself from it (whenever possible). Your path is only yours. And no one else.
Now, maybe, you are nobody, but time will pass and you will show yourself. Of course, if you go only forward. Of course, if you will go only forward. Sooner or later, you will reach your peak and you will become the object of envy.

Fears and phobias are the next killers. They chase almost everyone. Especially when newcomers are afraid to draw something that they are not good at. For example, people. The critics and trolls add fuel to the flame. A self-appraisal of artists is able to fall down across the board, and their risk of closing in themselves increases. I’ve been through the same thing. Experience comes only with practice. If you know your mistakes and work hard to eliminate them, then your success is inevitable. Just draw. Dismiss the trolls. I’ve seen so many times how these creatures destroy young artists... Well, what, that they will draw a hundred times crooked girls? But then they give out the right ones! We all go through this. Frankly, before I publish anything, I can reject a couple of dozen images, and then give something that will satisfy my own “filter”. Initially, all the works are “unsuccessful”. The artist himself is already making them successful, working on them in the process. The same characters can be drawn in different ways. And each version will be popular in its own way.

The overfatigue is closely adjacent to apathy. You can also add creative combustion here. Much has been written about it, so I just
mention.

Money wins

It’s not always. But, if we want to live somehow, eat something, then—alas. All this talk about the fact that “a favorite business also brings money” is not always correct. It is only when you set up your business correctly and don’t become a slave of green papers. An excellent option is passive earnings. It, however, will have to invest much more power than with simple freelance, but the return will be more impressive.

The destiny of true artists is not to disregard anyone’s opinion and just create. They don’t care for someone else’s opinion. They create what they see. And most importantly, they don’t depend on anyone’s money. If, however, these are also wildly popular, then they receive a double benefit.

If you are unhappy with your current life, then it’s time to reconsider it, draw conclusions, and look for your own way to the top.

How to become a popular. Part II [EN]What is popularity? This is in demand. It’s fame. When thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people know about you. And even more.
Popularity is when you are physically unable to respond to the tons of messages that come to you every minute.
Popularity is when thousands of people crave your attention, and you don’t have time to listen to each one catastrophically.
We can enumerate to infinity.
In a word, it’s a pain in the rear. No, it’s not all. There are pros and cons, but we’ll talk a little about the other.
“Rose-colored glasses”

The newbies, desperately eager to become a new sakimichan by any means, sometimes come across. They may not be able to draw, but they’ll dream of earning 100 thousand bucks, doing nothing. Such people will necessarily test all the “cheating” methods, some of which are set out in my articles. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is very naive. Sooner or later,
How to become popular. Part I    Beginner freelancers and simple artists in general, often ask me about how to achieve popularity. Popularity helps people to become famous, earn good money and creatively realize themselves. It's for the main part. But do not confuse “popularity” and “earnings”. You may be a popular artist but have absolutely no income.
Consider simple, free and low-budget methods of promotion on the example of Deviantart. Some of them can be adapted for other social networks. Here are 4 recipes I tested:
    Recipe 1 - Guaranteed
1-A. Make a “viral” fanart of the most popular universes (Star Wars, Pokemon, Game of Thrones, etc.). The term “viral” is taken from advertising. Its task is to cause a strong reaction from the viewer. It can contain either a funny story, either story that will surprise the audience. For example, on Devianta
Earning money. Much. Very much.    Do you want to earn $100, $1000 or even $10 000 per month? Maybe more? There are no limits for a freelancer!
    Three words:
    PORNO. ANIME. TUTORIALS.
These are the most current and bestselling themes. The best thing is to combine them. Famous artists earn from $1,000 to $60,000 and more per month (!). They have many imitators, but only the most hard-working are at the top of sales. Why is this happening? Let us learn more!

PORNO is classic. It will be always popular. A product that will never become obsolete. In any case, as long as people will be interested in the adult content. According to statistics, the most frequent buyers are from the male audience.
ANIME is one of the hottest themes. It is almost the most popular topic on Deviantart. The number of groups is more 1
10 reasons not to work for the client    How to understand that it is better not to work for certain clients? Why as time comes they are capable of stopping paying in the original volume or even ask the artist to work in debt, using “credibility”? Where to find the line, crossing which health and nerves become more important than money? I will share my experiences.
So, here are 10 reasons why you should not work for a client:
    1. “He pays little or doesn't want to pay more” is one of the most common. When I've worked for several publishers, I was often told “we want a very high quality, detailed illustration, but we can pay you $100 only” or “we need a series of cool covers, but cheap”. At that time they were quite famous and their modest budget surprised me. It was not an inspiring idea to work a whole month on a single picture for $100, but clients didn't seem to care about artists who ha
Why I'm not working with Russian Clients [EN]At the outset of my journey I had to deal with the numerous Russian customers. At that time, I had the minimal experience in working with them. And years later I can finally share the idea why I do not work with them at all.
So, why are the very Russian clients? We consider them within DA and the similar social networks. Experience has shown that same types of people are met everywhere. These are Type 1, 2 and 3 from the previous article. Moreover, there are Type 5 and 6. The first is met among the Russian much more frequent than had been thought.
Here is my brief description of the most Russian customers:

1. ‘The poor’
— they always incur the money deficit and look for a free ride or someone, who can do the work at a cheap rate. They will not feel shy to make ample promises or grift at all. There is a great many of them.

2. ‘The reflective’
— these people may think for hours and hours to accept you for work. They are possible to writ

The cure from envy    Perhaps this feeling is familiar to us all. The Internet is full of places where people literally sprinkle poison. The phrase: “a neighbor grass is always greener” appeared for a reason. People often do not try to understand the success of others, believing that they got it “accidentally” or “very easy”. In their understanding, others do not deserve to live better than they do. It is the reason for envy.
I've seen many examples when the beginners, who grew up in a real professional could lose some of their friends. Friends began to envy him terribly, despise them, tell nasty things about them behind their back. Of course, those “friends” did not seek to develop their skills and were stuck in the category of trolls. Such people never think what the price for success was.

Cheat! Cheats and Tricks    Cheat! Cheat! And cheat again! Use everything that can improve your performance, facilitate work, increase efficiency, save time and allow you to earn more money. Experiment, develop your own tricks, learn from the tricks of successful artists, and explore new ways. If you are able to quickly and efficiently do the work that would require a month earlier, and the client would gladly accept it, why not? Freelancing is a business. All means are good. Progress does not stand still. There are always new tools, ways to ease the hard work of the artist.
Let’s consider “cheating” as a good thing. For example, in the West there was time when they did not recognize the drawing of comics on computer, considering it something out of the ordinary. Today artists are eager to share their techniques of work on the graphics tablets. The computer that was considered as ”cheating”, has become an integral part of our lives. Jus
''Likes'' rule the worldWhy some of the artworks, though well made, not always get the proper popularity, and the others, drawn, almost in five minutes “with the heel of the left foot”, gain worldwide fame? Let’s talk about people psychology!
Different audience

Have you noticed that the fans more often and more actively like their favorite characters? They are already well-known brand. Millions of dollars were invested in it quite often. They are famous, they are known not by hearsay. These characters do not require presentation. They had already become heroes of TV shows, movies, comic books, games, etc. The main reason is their popularity. Artworks with them will always be more recognizable.
Different people use different sites. At some of them, the fanart doesn't work, but an original, well-done art will be in demand. Or, work with a certain style.
More color! More brightness!
Cartoony and stylized styles are very popular. The
How much costs artist's work? How to set prices? The most popular question asked by beginners in freelancing, is “how much to charge for my work?” If you haven't found an answer, then sit back!
Suppose you are doing well with the level of performance and your artwork is of interest to the public. How do you determine the prices on your artworks? Everything is very simple:
1. Count how much money you spend on living in a month. That is, how much you pay taxes, how much do you spend on food, medicine, clothes, and etc. The resulting figure is the minimum amount for your survival.
2. Add to it as much as you want to earn extra. But be realistic. A million dollars per month may only be a goal. You can’t earn that much at once. And hardly there are customers who can answer your appetites. Exceptions happen very rarely.
3. Let's say you need to earn $2,000 per month for a comfortable life. This means that you need to do 4 orders for $500 or 20 orders for $100. It all depends on the quality of pe

How to Earn Money - Part 3 [EN]Today, I would like to present you the third but brief article on earnings for artists.

Level 1 is on top of the pyramid, consisting of earnings on the educational content, courses, trai

Infernal freelancing - [EN]All men got used to success stories.
If only there are some of them they are beggars or free riders (we don’t consider situations when you

For beginners:

Where to begin? Where to go? [EN]Great! You chose art and decided to become an artist. Do you feel that you don’t know which area to go to? In 2D, 3D, etc.? And maybe, you can grab everything at once? But what about the mentors? How and where to learn it? And, most importantly, how long? Let’s do it in order!
This article was inspired by one personal message. Thanks to its author!
Art without borders
First, you have to get acquainted with different directions and, if possible, to probe each of them. Look at the time lapses of artists, high-speed video with modeling, how special effects are created, etc. You must have a clear understanding of what you are drawn to. You need to decide on the goal and what you want to become.
For example, many draw in 2D simply because it gives them a joy. Someone else at the same time manages to make a lot of money on his hobby. This is the case when the “useful is combined with the pleasant”.
One can write a lot on the definition and goal
Why is it important to learn the basics?    When I was a beginner in drawing, I terribly hated everything connected with the basics. Especially the anatomy of people. It seemed to me boring and uninteresting, I wanted to paint only what I liked, even if it was above my level of mastership. Today I will talk about HOW important basics are for the beginner artist.
Very often, we can see on the Internet, as the beginners are literally bombarded with criticism from complete strangers. Those are not always professionals and often do not even have an idea how to work. Such people may infect with anything. They may drive the beginners into depression, cause aggression, and offend the beginner whose pride does not allow him to admit his own mistakes. However! There were only separate cases. In contrast to them, I have met alternative situation, when the critics were very polite, courteous, friendly, and the beginner artists understood their level and had a fantastic patience. There is a th

1. Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.

Hello, everyone! I am a professional, certified artist from Russia, who has worked for the games and cinema industry for more than 10 years. Since 2012, I have been developing my own project called “Spiritus The Universe”, as well as running the “Epic Space” series. Alongside this, I also illustrate sci-fi books and create resources for other artists. In addition, I am a volunteer supporting people on the DeviantArt. Part of my help account for articles and lessons.

2. Why space art?

I always had the drive for the unknown outside of our world. It can be said that I had a love for the cosmos from birth. The direction gives an unlimited scope of imagination and this is one of the main reasons for my choice.

3. What space-related fact or phenomena is most fascinating to you at the moment?

One simple understanding of the fact that space is a colossal, boundless, and infinite space can’t fail to impress. I was always struck by the scale of the universe and things that go beyond the bounds of our understanding. And the more mankind learns about the cosmos, the more inspiration I get. The year 2017 definitely was rich in astronomical events. I was able to observe the eclipse and it was fantastic! It is difficult to single out something concrete. I am inspired by any achievements of NASA.

4. Digital or Traditional?

Definitely, they are both. I’ve been working for a long time as a digital artist, trying numerous techniques and, eventually, came to the conclusion that for the best result, it’s necessary to combine everything (depending on the project). I also found that the best cosmic nebulae are obtained from abstractions made from conventional materials in traditional. The concept of the “TANORRA” planet was made on the basis of sand and water at all.

5. Would you mind telling us what kinds of tools you use, how you use them and your thoughts on them overall?

My main tools are Photoshop, Cinema4D, Zbrush, Maya, and a few more. A full list of the programs used can be found in my profile on Artstation in “About”. I use Wacom Intuos Pro M as a graphic tablet. Apart from these, I also use the materials and resources of my own production: textures, photos from observatories, 3D simulations, brushes, etc.

6. How would you describe your art style, in your own words?

This is a vivid hybrid of semi-realism with realism. In fact, I always strive for the second one, but the desires of customers and the market require me to brighten the picture. Working for “Spiritus The Universe”, I still try to stick to realism in the concepts.

7. Walk us through your process, from concept to finished piece.

It’s generally accepted that everything starts with an idea. But it also happens that I have no ideas and I just take an abstraction (photo, texture, etc.) and start to “mock” it. I’m kidding. I experiment with it until something interesting begins to appear. After that, I bring it to mind, add the final details, and publish it on the web. There’s also the method of a “blind technique” when I draw with my eyes closed. I create concepts of characters and environments from abstractions and images. This is a very popular way to work on “The Spiritus”.

Space Dragon Argont 2 by ERA-7

If we talk about the traditional approach, then yes, everything really starts with an idea. At first, you need to imagine the future picture, then make sketches, choose the most ideal, and begin to work through. I’ll give an example of how the “+ REAPER +” scene was created.

1) Since the task was to make the spacecraft concept, I started with modeling in Zbrush. After making the model, I sent it to render in Keyshot. In the same place, I set up the most interesting foreshortening. The idea was that the ship would go out of the shadow zone into the light.

2) I sent the render received to Photoshop and then picked up the basis for the background. I really liked one of the NASA images, and I decided to use it as a basis.

02 by ERA-7S

3) After working on the background, I began to add additional objects, details, effects, and light. All planets and meteorites were also modeled in 3D. I usually create planets in Cinema4D. I also can pre-render special effects in programs for creating fractals.

4) The final assembly looks like this:

8. Any upcoming projects you are excited about?

As for the upcoming ones, I don’t know, but I already have the long-term construction “The Spiritus” aforementioned. There is one character in it, the concept of which I’ve been working on for more than 3 years. Also, I have plans to make a whole series of pirate spacecrafts. The project is really huge, and I think it will become my main one for the coming years.

9. What is the hardest part about what you do?

The most difficult is the right combination of techniques and the creation of a harmonious picture. This is especially important in large stages, which can take more than one week. Also, the main thing is to balance the accents and details.

10. What is the best, or most enjoyable, part about making space art?

This’s the absolute freedom of imagination. Since outer space is often represented by abstract forms and there are no superstrict rules in the depiction of nebulae, I feel myself unlimited in ideas. Of course, nobody canceled the laws of physics, but, on the whole, creating beautiful abstractions is quite a fun experience. Sometimes it’s even a part of my “rest”.

11. In what areas are you still trying to improve?

Improved rendering skills of smoke simulations in 3D programs. Due to the constant workload of clients’ projects, I always do not have enough time to thoroughly study this direction. But definitely this is my #1 goal in the future, since I see in it a huge potential.

12. Any tips for new space artists?

I would advise beginners to always start from the base. You can correctly and competently move on only after studying the basics. Despite the fact that the outer space is abstract, the artist still must follow certain rules in order to best convey the idea to the viewer. Well, then you can combine different techniques and try something new.

13. Have you done any tutorials, on site or off?

Yes, you can find a couple of lessons from the “making of” category and a PDF guide to drawing nebulae in my gallery. In the future, I will definitely publish video lessons. A few of them have long been planned and will be implemented as soon as possible.

MAKING OF - LION SPIRIT by ERA-7

14. Which of your works are you most proud of?

You know, these will be published in the future. Because of the work, I can’t do my best in every picture I made for myself. And the orders are often limited by the budget. However, there are things that I really like. For example, “+To the Infinity+”, “+ANCIENT GOD+”, “+TANORRA+”, “+EYAO+”, and “Epic Space: Flame”. Probably, I’ll highlight “+To the Infinity+” among them, because I can look at it forever. It is both enigmatic and inspiring.

EYAO by ERA-7 Epic Space: Flame by ERA-7

15. What, in your opinion, is your most underrated piece of artwork?

You know, strangely enough, but “+TANORRA+” and “+EYAO+” are my best concepts on planets, but on DeviantArt, they’ve been received very little attention and I had to leave them on Artstation. Probably, I’ll make new versions in the future, but already taking into account the audience’s preferences for dA. This is just the case when the more vivid art is “sold” more successfully than one done in realism.

EYAO by ERA-7

16. Which other space artists inspire you?

Oh... Everyone inspires me. It’s hard to single out someone specific, but I’ve always really liked the works of cosmicspark and artists from Mass Effect, especially from ME4.

17. Any last words?

I always repeat it to beginners and I will say it again: drawing is just a skill. All the great artists once did not know how. Much more important is not how qualitatively you know how to render, but what you put in your work. Never run after other artists, go your own way. Do what you like, and skills can always be hone. The level comes only with experience.

In order to achieve something, I had to invest in myself constantly, spend all the money on my stud

Sooner or later,
How much costs artist's work?

“Earn Money. Much. Very much.”).

:new:P.S.

Thank you so much to :icongallery4design: for all questions! Well, the interview is not published on their site yet but I would like to share it with you guys in anyway!

1. Did you take any drawing or art classes to develop your style?

First of all, I would like to welcome all who read this =) .
In the distant past, I started as a self-taught person, but one day, when I took part in one very serious competition, I was given to clearly understand that it was necessary to go somewhere to study. Otherwise, I’ll doom myself to a very slow growth. Then, I decided to go to the Realtime School, the school of computer graphics. After going there a few courses, I had switched to online training, gaining knowledge already from foreign instructors. My last class was a course in CGMA. However, I can hardly be called a diligent student : ). I had always given a hard training in the group. I had always sought to realism, but the diploma received had a serious impact the quality of my performance. I would even say changed my mind.

2. Some artists struggle many years before finding a personal “artistic style” was or is it the same for you?

In my case, today’s bright style is dictated by the market, although, I confess, I can work in different ways. I often get calls for illustrations on popular films, games, and TV series. In this matter, I relate myself to artists of a broader profile.

3.How long have you been drawing/creating art and does it have any importance in your personal/professional life?

I’ve been working professionally in this field for over 10 years, but I’ve been painting my whole life. The love to create something that does not exist on the canvas, was always present. This is an integral part of my life and myself. Although, you know, I own my today’s career to one failure 15 years ago. Then I had a dream to become a writer, but more experienced people from the professional sphere successfully had despised it. And then I decided that I’d become an artist and would tell the stories visually. As part of the work, I would say that this is the most successful case when a favorite business also brings some money.

4. You have great colors in almost all your artworks. Is this achieved only in Photoshop or do you combine different software’s?

Thank you! Everything depends on the project. Usually, I don’t go beyond Photoshop, but often there are things that are easier to create in other programs. For example, I like to make space ships in Zbrush, and planets in Cinema4D. I render the basis for the space backgrounds in Chaotica. A full list of the programs used can be found in my profile on Artstation in “About”.

5. City of Thousands of Lights is simply well executed and inspiring in many ways. Could you tell us little more about it?

First of all, I’ll say that it was an order. The client wanted a night city with a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere and without any Gothic. It was supposed to be the capital of an alien civilization, resembling people in appearance. Based on the assignment and references, I sketched a scene combining sci-fi and oriental style in architecture.

Then the matte-painting technique was used. Different elements of the scene required a different approach. The main process took several days. Preparing for it and finding an idea – about 2 weeks. I had to extract the references for the tree on the left for the project in real life. The balcony was made in Zbrush, rendered in Keyshot, and finalized in Photoshop. In general, the scene is almost completely made in 2D. It has a fairly simple composition but at the same time very successful one. I have to say, this is my first work in a panoramic style and I really enjoyed the experience. I think I’ll do more of these pictures in the future.

6. Artists finds inspirations or ideas from all kind of places, where or how do you find inspiration?

Most of all I'm inspired by music and it doesn't matter what genre it is. If it “catches”, then I can work day and night over the same project until it is complete. It’s hard to describe. Sometimes you seem to fall into such a “trance” and work hard until you squeeze out all that you can. “Tokyo 2369”, “Ancient God”, “Asian Spirit”, and some other works were created just like that.

7. And the final questions.
What kind of tips would you suggest for the beginning struggling artist?

Since I know how often novice artists are unsure of their abilities, I would recommend never to reproach yourself for failure. It was hard for me to realize that mistakes are only a part of the learning process, but it’s really so. Dear beginners, never take your failures too close to your heart, even if there were a lot of them in your life. Any negative experience can always be converted into positive, even simply telling about it in a blog to the whole world. Learning from different masters, I also realized that there are no “truly right” ways in the drawing. Each of them is individual and has it’s own view of things. You can learn from them techniques and learn styles, but you have to find your own way, as an artist, you have to find yourself. Never chase after anyone. Do not become someone’s clone, creating the same illustrations. This is useful in training, but don’t make yourself someone else’s double. Strive to be unique and inimitable in everything that you do. And, of course, don’t forget to help other people, even just leaving them good comments. Remember, it’s the people who make you popular. Most eminent artists will never come to the newcomer’s gallery and will not write nice words for various reasons. They can be understood, but once you become one of them, you can’t even imagine how much joy your message will deliver. And, perhaps, you can even change someone’s life, and he’ll want to become the same cool illustrator, too... =)

In order to achieve something, I had to invest in myself constantly, spend all the money on my stud

Great!

One can write a lot on the definition and goals, but suppose you want to become a commercial, successful artist and create a different concept art with illustrations. In this plan, you will definitely need to study the digital drawing with all its fundamentals, and also take courses on 3D. In today’s world, it will be very difficult without them.

How can you learn this? The cheapest method is self-education. But at the same time, I strongly recommend that you communicate with masters who can really be trusted and with whom it will be possible, from time to time, to consult. The best option is the instructors and the training on the courses. I will discuss this in more detail in one of the following articles.

Why do we need mentors? They are needed to correct you, give adequate criticism and guide you in the right direction of learning. Otherwise, you will start making trivial, typical mistakes that will continue until someone else pokes you into them. For example, once I had indulged in using black and white colors in the illustrations. My work looked dirty, difficult to accept. I didn’t see this and didn’t understand until I went to study in a special school of computer graphics. There they quickly knock some sense into my head. I was forced to turn over my entire inner world, change my thinking. And all this happened for a mere 2 days. The basic course lasted exactly that much. Before that, I spent about at least 6 years to learn something from scratch... It was fantastic.

In those days, I really wanted to cover almost all production stages in animation projects – from the idea in my head to the presentation of the finished film to the audience. It seemed to me that it was not as difficult as they said... After 10 years, I’m still learning. Of course, someone will say that the artist, in general terms, studies all his life and he will be right. But we are talking about the production stages. It is incredibly difficult for one person to be able to draw, simulate, rig, adjust, animate, trend, mount, process, etc. Especially if you want to do “like in Hollywood movies” – to look cool. I’m not talking about writing skills, voice recording, and writing music... There are an incredible variety of things for which beginners are hurrying to take, plainly not realizing that their development can go not just years but decades. Someone may have a whole life. It’s important to stop here, decide on something concrete, and accept that it’s physically impossible to do everything “cool” at once. We are not robots without a personal life. We don’t have to sit behind the monitor and stare at pixels all 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. So you can go blind.

So, I repeat the stages:

  • 1) Study the directions that interest you. See videos, work examples, career prospects, requirements, etc.
  • 2) Try drawing, modeling, programming, editing video... whatever you’re interested in. Do these things until you clearly understand what you want to do. It can be several directions. Select the most important, those to which you are drawn. Over time, you can supplement them with new ones or change. It’s not scary. We are constantly developing. We are looking for something new. I will say right away, drawing is a skill. There is an opinion that in order to achieve a decent level of skill in it, it is necessary to work for at least 10 years, and in a slipshod manner, but every day. It is desirable, with full return, but not reprocessing. If I compare my experience 10 years ago and the current one, then this is ham and cheese, so I can responsibly confirm the veracity of what has been said.
  • 3) Determined this, find mentors, courses, schools, etc. It can be any source for your development. It’s very important to have in the teachers exactly the master instructors, and not the people who don’t apply to your direction at all. It’s difficult to get a standing “kick for speed” from such people. How can they ask advice from them if they never painted or modeled anything? Again, the masters must inspire confidence. They are very different, too. I came across those who didn’t want to share knowledge with beginners in any way, especially if they didn’t have any experience in teaching someone. They can be understood.
  • 4) Develop daily, hourly. Find time to work. Learn everything that can improve your skills and develop your range of vision. I was once told that you can learn to draw “cool” for a month. Someone succeeded in 1-2 years. And someone didn’t go beyond drawing “balls” for 10 years. Industriousness is everything. But I also add that all people require an individual approach to training. You can’t lump together everybody and learn from the pattern. It’s wrong. Everyone has his own, unique, inner world and vision. Accordingly, all people require different time in mastering certain skills. Someone will be able to paint easily, and someone will saturate oneself in 3D modeling. Don’t blame yourself for failure if something doesn’t work out. It’s worth finding other ways to your goal. They’re enough.
  • 5) Having reached the fifth point and, having acquired a more or less normal portfolio, you can already think about finding customers and employers. Here, you can earn money, but don’t rush into the footsteps of super-popular artists. It also happens that you’ll have to find your own approach to obtaining money. Someone likes to stay more an artist and just get income through passive methods of earning.

Mentors

I will especially focus your attention on this topic, in spite of what has already been said. The fact is that all people have different opinions and even masters may differ in their views on the same thing. In the beginning, you’ll have to adopt their techniques, knowledge, and experience, because at this stage your own information base is very scarce, so you have to do it anyway. And, until you find out “the whole kitchen from the inside” and you won’t be able to achieve at least some success, as a specialist, you can shove your opinion as deep as possible. Listen to what you are taught. Absorb another’s world like a sponge. It’s useful to you in order to have your own look in the future. Beginners are always very unsure of how to work properly. When they grow into professionals and clearly understand the processes, they’re already able to become mentors themselves.

Well, I repeat the thought: find a master who will inspire you with confidence, and his criticism won’t cause any doubts. Naturally, it must be successful. Always learn from those who have achieved something.

Clones

It also happens that the students are so successful in their studies that they can ideally copy the mentor. There is nothing wrong. If the style of work is in demand in the market, then it’s very good. But, if we’re talking about originality, then such artists are often called clones. The viewer isn’t interested in looking at the same type of picture. He craves diversity. Working in a popular style, you’ll have to surprise, create something that no one has done before. This can become a special "highlight" of the artist.

What is popularity?

Sooner or later, these newcomers will still come to the fact that they need to go all the way from beginning to end, with all the obstacles and difficulties, that is, master the base, pump skills, and achieve something as artists, and not jump from the first level to the hundredth immediately. This is life, guys. You can’t just say, “I’m an artist and I wAnt tO hAve a lOt of money!”, and in a moment to become so. Otherwise, you will inevitably encounter disappointment. Perhaps, it will be more than once. However, any experience, even negative, will make you stronger. You better understand how to act in the future. This is part of the inevitable development. Just accept the reality as it is. If somewhere you can take a shortcut and it doesn’t hurt you in general – it’s wonderful. Go ahead. But never abuse cheating. Everything is good within the “golden mean”.

“Help others”

One day, a newcomer wrote to me, “It’s better to collect $1 from a million people, than a million dollars from one person.(c)
And I’ll say this, “It’s better to help a million people, so that this million will help you.” Money is nothing. They are needed only for our survival and the provision of our material needs. The support of other people is much more valuable. It’s difficult to achieve something in this world without it. Even a banal placement is much easier if you have the right friends in the right places. So, one of the main recipes of popularity is the help and support of other people, especially if they are beginners in the drawing. You can’t imagine how it’s cool. They get motivated to continue their path, and you find new friends who also subscribed to you, put you likes, and leave comments. This method is very hard work, but a grateful one. Communicating in the social network, we can forget about its true purpose – communication. Other people find out about your existence only in this way, and only in this way you’ll become known (not counting other methods).

“Star fever”

When I was a beginner in drawing, I was terribly infuriated by the arrogant, impudent attitude of tough artists. As it is not strange, I met exactly Russian-speaking comrades, who considered themselves almost as art-gods, and newcomers as something from the category of shit. Anything below their level was automatically unworthy of attention. They always looked only at those who had an even cool portfolio.

I was always amazed by this attitude. Moreover, the higher such an “artist”, the more arrogant he looked at me. He could easily find fault with everything, or even rude, once again proving how big the difference between us is in terms of skill. If we talk about star fever, then this is only one of its manifestations.

Never forget that you are just as simple a person as everyone else. Drawing is just a skill, achieved with patience, time, and hard work. You will not become happier, humiliating others on your own whims. It’s much better to feel yourself, simply by making people
useful, like, for example, artists who are releasing lessons on Gumroad. Yes, they make money this way. But some still actively help their students. Due to this, the authors themselves grow. This is in a separate article.

So, the main moral for today:

“Nothing is not found so simple. Don’t believe in easy ways. Popularity is achieved in many ways, but one of them, guaranteed one, is to help as many people as possible. This is how they will know about you and will remember you in a good light.”

Develop, grow, and embody your dreams! And I’m going to volunteer. See you in the new articles!

P.S. Someone might say, “
You can collect one buck from a million friends”, but that’s not true. More precisely, the point is not this. And it’s not even that someone will not give. Simple human support is capable of giving much more. It’s hard to explain. It’s enough to feel once.

I] [EN version]

:la:
